To further enhance the payment convenience for urban rail transit passengers and optimize the travel experience for both domestic and international travelers, Shanghai Metro has actively responded to the requirements put forward in the Opinions on Further Optimizing Payment Services and Improving Payment Convenience by State Council, continuously leveling up passenger service capabilities. On June 28, Shanghai Metro achieved full network implementation of contactless payment by various types of bank cards such as China UnionPay chip cards, international credit cards (including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Japan Credit Bureau—JCB) and digital RMB, as well as entry/exit with quick pass by digital RMB hard wallet.
Currently, the total operating mileage of Shanghai urban rail transit system has reached 896 km, encompassing 21 lines and 517 stations, with an average weekday passenger volume of approximately 12 million, shouldering over 77% of the city′s total public transportation traffic. The rollout of this new payment function will significantly improve the travel convenience for inbound passengers, enabling them to reach major urban destinations for cultural, tourism, commercial, sporting, and exhibition activities with a single card. This initiative not only enhances the city′s public transportation service system but also strongly supports the optimization of the business environment, facilitates international visitors, and energizes urban vitality.
This payment system upgrade marks two major breakthroughs in the industry: One is the full compatibility across all transit modes, meaning that the system is simultaneously deployed across different transit formats—including metro, city railway, and maglev lines—with gates supporting the three major standards of UnionPay, international card organizations, and digital RMB, and transaction speed is controlled within half a second, enabling seamless tap-and-go access; the other is an asynchronous pre-authorization ′loose entry, strict exit′ model for peak traffic conditions in response to the tide-like passenger flow concentration patterns in Shanghai urban rail transit, not only ensuring financial transaction security but also significantly improving the efficiency of card-based entry. This achievement reflects the collective efforts and expertise of all stakeholders. Within just three months, Shanghai Metro collaborated with UnionPay, Bank of Communications, four major international card organizations, and partners along industrial chains to complete over 3 000 tests across more than 500 stations and 13 000 terminal devices throughout the network. Key technical challenges related to compatibility and security were successfully overcome, setting a record for ticketing system upgrades in Shanghai Metro.
The promotion and application of contactless bank card payments and digital RMB hard wallets for gate access mark a significant step forward in Shanghai Metro′s efforts to build smart transportation and optimize its international payment environment. This initiative represents not only an upgrade in the service capacity of transportation infrastructure but also a bold exploration in diversifying payment methods, deepening digital RMB integration with payment scenarios, and enhancing intelligent user experiences in the rail transit sector. Looking ahead, Shanghai Metro will continue the advancement along the technical route of integrating financial technology and payment convenience, allowing both domestic and international passengers to enjoy a superior travel experience, and contributing to Shanghai′s accelerated development towards becoming a globally influential and modern socialist international metropolis.
