Transport Capacity Expansion Method of Urban Rail Transit Lines with Seriously Unbalanced Directional Passenger Flow in Peak Hour

  • The definition of seriously unbalanced directional passenger flow in peak hour is presented. Then the background and operation situation of the IRT Flushing Line′s triple-track reformation and the Jōban Line′s quadruple-track reformation are investigated and analyzed. Compared with quadruple-track reformation, triple-track reformation can save costs and use transport capacity effectively, while having difficulty in vehicle scheduling. Shanghai Metro Line 6 is taken as an example to discuss the possibility of expanding transport capacity by triple-track reformation. Targeting the vehicle scheduling difficulty for the train on third track, two strategies that single-track operation mode and reorganization of non-peak direction train are proposed.
