High-performance Turnback Technology Centered on Route Resources and Its Application

  • Objective Due to the limitation of turnback capacity at terminal stations along operation routes, the minimum headway of line operation cannot meet the short-term large cross-section passenger flow demand during morning and evening peak hours. Therefore, it is necessary to study a high-performance turnback technology centered on route resources and its application.
    Method Based on existing turnback operation procedures and considering the constraints on turnback capacity, the operational status and capacity bottlenecks of existing lines are analyzed. From the refinement of turnout resource control and the precision of authorized resource management two aspects, the high-performance turnback technology centered on route resources is elaborated in detail. The proposed scheme adopts a resource control mode based on the actual train positions, enabling precise planning and design of tracking and turnback modes, and finely controlling train operation resources in both spatial and temporal dimensions. The practicality and superiority of the proposed scheme are verified through its application on Shanghai Rail Transit Line 5.
    Result & Conclusion  By changing the traditional interlocking logic in which trains exclusively occupy the turnback area, the proposed method shortens the train tracking interval during the turnback process, thereby improving the line capacity. The actual application results on Shanghai Rail Transit Line 5 show that after applying this high-performance turnback scheme, the measured multi-train turnback interval is less than 85 seconds, and the overall line capacity increased by approximately 26%, effectively breaking the capacity bottleneck of existing lines.
